Universal Pictures Home Entertainment (formerly Universal Studios Home EntertainmentUniversal Studios Home VideoMCA/Universal Home VideoMCA Home VideoMCA Videodisc Inc. and MCA Videocassette Inc.) is the home video distribution division of American film studio Universal Pictures, owned by the Universal Filmed Entertainment Group division of NBCUniversal, which is owned by Comcast.

Universal Studios Home Video was the distributor of Barney videos in the United Kingdom/Ireland from 1999-2002 after buying the original distributing company PolyGram Filmed Entertainment.

On May 1, 2014, it was announced that Universal Studios Home Entertainment would become the distributor of HIT Entertainment videos, beginning October 1 of that year. As part of the arrangement, Universal acquired rights to distribute, sell and market Hit Entertainment's videos in the U.S. and Canada across Blu-ray, DVD, Electronic Sell-Through and VOD platforms.[1]

On July 3, 2018, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment would re-release a few Barney Home Videos alongside 9 Story Media Group.

Trivia[]

United Kingdom/Ireland[]

  • Like Polygram, Universal released some of the UK Barney videos out of order in comparison to their US releases.
  • Although Barney's Adventure Bus was the first Barney video to be released by Universal as their ident is featured on the video, it's cover art and tape label features the Polygram logo. This could indicate that this video was originally going to be released by Polygram before being sold to Universal.
  • Barney's Adventure Bus and Barney's Night Before Christmas feature the third video ad made by Polygram where the videos are seen scrolling along the bottom of the screen. Most of the releases from 2000 feature ads for Barney CDs and Audio Cassettes. In a similar formula to the third Polygram video ad, the CDs/Cassettes scroll along the bottom of the screen.
  • Barney's Ride and Play and Barney's Families are Special / Barney's Alphabet Zoo are extremely rare releases as they were released exclusively to Marks and Spencers (Supermarket brand in the UK/Ireland).
  • Most of these videos would later be re-released by HIT Entertainment after they owned the rights to Barney.
