The Man in the Moon is a make-believe character who only appeared in the episode "The Misbegotten Moon: A Space Adventure" which was a part of the the twelfth season of Barney & Friends. The Man in the Moon was voiced by Burt Kehoe while he was animated by Debbie Dunning.

The Man in the Moon's story was told in the story of "Once Upon a Moon". He was an old man who wished to no longer be too hot or too cold. Given his wish, a magician decided to turn him into the moon since it isn't too hot or too cold. Barney makes it apparent that while the Man in the Moon is only make-believe, he can be seen by imagination. Prior to the story told by Barney, Marcos, Jackie and Baby Bop, other characters who appeared in the respective episode, have seen the Man in the Moon before, especially Baby Bop who mentions that she talks to him almost every night.

Given their talk about him, Baby Bop decided to say goodnight to him to only notice that she can only see half of him. Barney decides to take Baby Bop, Marcos and Jackie to the moon due to Baby Bop's concern. Once they arrive, the Man in the Moon greets everyone. The Man in the Moon, appreciates Baby Bop's concern and explains to Baby Bop that she couldn't see the entirety of him from the park due to a shadow. He further explains that even if all of him can't be seen, he'll always be in the sky shining down on Earth. He goes on to say that he may look different in the sky once they look up, leading Barney to explain the various shapes he can be seen as (such as full, half and crescent), and that he'll be here every night.

The Man in the Moon further emphasizes that he was glad that Barney and his friends could visit him and looks forward to the next time that they might come to visit. Once they get back to Earth, Baby Bop notices some moon dust on her shoes, further thinking that it was a gift from the Man in the Moon.
