"I Had a Little Hen" is a nursery rhyme that first appeared in It's Time For Counting. It later reappeared in Barney's Best Manners: Your Invitation to Fun with different lyrics.

Lyrics[]

I had a little hen, the prettiest seen
She washed the dishes, and kept the house clean
She went to the mill to fetch some flour
She brought it home in less than an hour
She baked me bread, brought me mail
She sat by the fire and told a fine tale
I had a little hen the prettiest seen
She washed the dishes and kept the house clean.

I know a little hen, the prettiest ever seen
I help my friend to keep her house clean
We went to the mill to fetch some flour
We brought it home in less than an hour
She baked my bread
She brewed my tea
Then we sat by the fire most happily
We know a little hen, the prettiest ever seen
She helps her friend to keep her house clean
They baked some bread, they brewed some tea, they sat by the fire most happily.

Trivia[]

  • In the version that appeared in "It's Time for Counting", it follows closely with the original rhyme, but changes the part about brewing ale to bringing mail to avoid using a reference to alcohol in a kids show. However, in Best Manners: Your Invitation to Fun, the rhyme is changed to show how the little hen helps the farmer's wife with chores not only but the ale line is changed to tea.
