Background
In 1997, after Barney's Sense-Sational Day finished filming, an entire new cast of kids would replace the First Generation Cast in the then-upcoming Season 4. Stephen, Kim, Ashley, Alissa, Kristen and Maria, characters that either made a cameo appearance(s), guest appearance, or Season 3 Home Video appearance, all return to the show as primary characters.
To go along with a new cast, the playground, school, classroom, and treehouse all get upgraded.
- The school doors change from orange to green; the windows have a green trim rather than white; and it now has a wheelchair ramp. An extension to the front of the school was added, with many bulletin boards and hallways. In It's Time for Counting, a library was added that would appear throughout the rest of the generation.
- The classroom has been rearranged completely, looking almost nothing like previous seasons.
- The playground gets more plants, and a red bench surrounds a tree. The fences have also changed to green rail fences.
- The treehouse gets a totally updated, looking nothing like its Season 3 counterpart. Near the back, there is a huge round table, where the kids have snacks, read books, and even make arts and crafts (using the Barney Bag!). In the back of the treehouse, there is a ship wheel that the kids use to pretend that they are sailing. In the front of the treehouse, there are benches that look out to the outside deck of the treehouse.
- In addition, a lookout is added to the treehouse. This is where the kids pretend to fly an airplane or watch for a special surprise to come. There are stairs that lead up to the look out, and a slide that connects from the lookout to the back of the treehouse.
The original creator, Sheryl Leach, would stay Executive Producer until 1998. Dennis DeShazer would stay Executive Producer until the end of this generation. Previous crew members Stephen White, Mark S. Bernthal, and Mitch Lobrovich return to write more episodes, while director Jim Rowley also returns. Music Director Bob Singleton from the First Generation was replaced by Joseph Phillips, who is still the music director today. On March 30, 1998, Barney's first and only movie Barney's Great Adventure this theaters. The film received negavtive reviews, and it was unable to recover the $15 million budget. To celebrate Barney's first 10 years, a home video "Sing and Dance with Barney" and an album "I Love to Sing with Barney" were both released.
In 2001, Lyrick Studios, the original company of Barney, was bought out by HiT Entertainment. Starting with Let's Go to the Zoo, the HiT logo would replace the Lyrick Studios logo. After this Generation ends, the whole kid cast will be replaced for the third generation. Mr. Boyd will return, but Stella, Scooter McNutty, Miss Etta, and Booker T. Bookworm will not. The voice of Barney (Bob West) and costume actor (David Joyner) will also not return for the next generation, along with the costume actor for BJ (Jeff Brooks). The school set also gets replaced.
