Barney's Beach Party

Title card

Barney's Beach Party is a 2002 direct-to-video Barney Home Video that was released on April 30, 2002. Directed by Jeff Gittle and written by Stephen White, this was the first Barney DVD produced by HIT Entertainment.

Plot[]

Noticing that it's been raining for three whole days, Danny wonders if the rain would ever stop soon. As Danny and Kim continue to stare out the treehouse window, Jeff, Keesha and Emily arrive, with the latter having Barney with her. Noticing that Barney got a little wet, he's dried off with a towel and eventually springs to life. Telling everyone about the picture on the towel, which is a beach with sailboats, an ocean and a sun, the kids wish to rather be in a sunny environment rather than be in the rain. With a little imagination, Barney takes the kids to the beach.

Experiencing the warmth of the sun, everyone puts on sunscreen to protect themselves from the sun. Danny accidentally puts on too much sunscreen, hence prompting for a towel to use to wipe it off. Looking for a towel, Baby Bop's blankey is pulled out from Barney's bag, with Baby Bop eventually coming to greet the gang and getting her blankey. Danny eventually gets a real towel to use. Barney suggests for Baby Bop to join in their fun on the beach. Baby Bop questions if they'll play with toys, with Barney allowing everyone to help themselves to a toy in his bag. Baby Bop grabs a deflated beach ball and Barney eventually blows air into it. After blowing air into Baby Bop's toy, the kids all crowd around Barney to ask if they could blow up there's. After blowing up all the toys, the kids decide to have fun tossing beach balls to each other. Danny passes a beach ball to Baby Bop, but she eventually misses it, hence giving BJ the chance to catch it and join everyone on the beach.

BJ tells the gang that he's going to go windsurfing, but not before getting a surfboard at the beach store first. Everyone follows BJ to the beach store and finds Mr. Boyd working the store. Danny notices different hats and Barney informs everyone that wearing a hat is a good idea because it protects ones head from the sun. Mr. Boyd allows everyone to try on a hat of their choice. Mr. Boyd tells them that they can wear their hats to the beach party, and informs everyone as to what the party will entail. Given that it's too early for the party, Barney suggests that they can all have more fun on the beach until its time. Baby Bop wants to play in the sand and BJ wants to go windsurfing, with Mr. Boyd giving both dinosaurs what they need respectively. Mr. Boyd takes the kids on a sailboat ride as Barney watches the store until they return. As Mr. Boyd and the kids go on a sailboat ride, they see BJ windsurfing.

After sailing, Kim, Danny and Keesha hunt for shells on the beach, with Barney eventually joining them. Hearing all of what they've done so far from Barney, Mr. Boyd asks if they're all ready for a snack. Seeing the various snacks that's available at the store, everyone gets excited when they see ice cream available. Everyone lines up to get a scoop. Baby Bop is unsure as to what flavor of ice cream she wants. Mr. Boyd proceeds to give her a cone with every kind of flavor he has. Seeing the multiple scoops of ice cream his sister has, BJ asks for the exact same thing. Due to losing count, Mr. Boyd only has enough ice cream for one scoop. (That is, as he says to BJ, "I sort of lost count there, BJ. But I only have enough ice cream left for one".) BJ accidentally drops his ice cream cone (with one scoop of ice cream) in the sand. And Baby Bop eventually shares her ice cream with him.

After enjoying their ice cream, Baby Bop notices wind chimes blowing. Due to the wind, Mr. Boyd suggests that flying a kite is great fun on the beach. Barney, Baby Bop, Keesha and Danny all have fun flying kites on the beach. BJ, Kim, Emily and Jeff notice the pretty colors of the kites flying, with Mr. Boyd then telling them that pretty colors are also seen under the water. As the kids wish to see under the water, Barney takes BJ and the children underwater in the a submarine. As Barney, BJ and the kids go for a submarine ride, a fish follows them throughout the journey. As Mr. Boyd gets ready for the beach party, he brings out sand pails for the children to play with. Baby Bop declares that she's going to make a big sandcastle with BJ declaring that his will be bigger than hers. Barney suggests that the both of them make their sandcastles so everyone can look at them. BJ gets help from a few of the kids to help build his. As Baby Bop views BJ's castle, she takes them over to hers where everyone views a gigantic sandcastle. After playing some castle games, the gang gets ready for the beach party.

Sitting by the fire, everyone makes smores. After making smores, Barney introduces everyone to his friends Kalea and Leilani. Barney invited the two to the party so everyone can learn the hula. The ladies show everyone their dance and invite everyone to try and hula with them. After doing the hula, everyone notices the sunset. Kim tells Barney that the beach has been wondering with Baby Bop agreeing, expressing her love for the beach. Barney tells them that if they use their imaginations, they can visit the beach anytime. Eventually Baby Bop gets sleepy, prompting BJ to take her home, especially with the sun setting. Barney and the kids say their goodbyes to Mr. Boyd and the gang goes back to the treehouse. When they get back to the treehouse, they notice that the rain stopped.

Production[]

Hawaii's culture and natural beauty were the inspirations when scriptwriter Stephen White wrote the video while in the state visiting his parents Donald and Johanne, retirees originally from Indiana.[1] Barney's Beach Party was one of five home videos filmed from mid-1999 to early 2000 immediately after season six of Barney & Friends wrapped production. Other videos filmed around the same time included Barney's Super Singing Circus, Be My Valentine Love, Barney, You Can Be Anything, and Round and Round We Go.

Audio[]

Like Be My Valentine Love, Barney, this video was originally scored by Bob Singleton, as evident by one outtake from this video, where a sample of that score's rendition of "Imagine a Place" is heard. But before the official release, it was re-scored by Joseph K. Phillips. Unlike Be My Valentine Love, Barney, where both were credited, Singleton is uncredited for this video. So far, this is the only portion of Singleton's score that has surfaced.

Adaptation[]

Book[]

The video was adapted into a story that was featured in Barney Annual 2003.

In honor of the video's release, Barney made his first-ever trip to Hawaii on April 26, 2002. From April 27-28, 2002, a sneak preview of Barney's Beach Party was shown on a thirty-foot screen at "Sunset on the Beach" in Waikiki. More than 30,000 fans attended the premiere.[2] The presentation was followed by a twenty minute sing-along with Barney, BJ and Baby Bop performing songs[3][4][5] from the video. Barney’s performance at “Sunset on the Beach” was sponsored by KHET-TV Hawaiian Public Television, along with the City of Honolulu and The Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort & Spa.

Barney's Beach Party was also backed by a massive consumer marketing campaign, that was expected to generate an estimated 50 million impressions, under the travel sweepstakes known as "The Barney Beachstakes". "The Barney Beachstakes" awared a family to a week-long vacation at the Hyatt Waikiki Regency Resort & Spa in Honolulu. Runner-up prizes included Barney beach towels (courtesy of Franco Mfg. Co.), the then upcoming video Round and Round We Go (courtesy of HIT Entertainment), Barney Bathtime Pals plush (courtesy of Fisher-Price), and Barney Book Sets (courtesy of Scholastic). The sweepstakes, along with the appearance of Barney, BJ and Baby Bop in Hawaii, was promoted on the Hyatt Waikiki Regency Resort & Spa web page and in the resort's consumer mailings, as well as on the City and County of Honolulu web site.[6] The sweepstakes was promoted on all Barney videos released between December 2001 and August 2002, and on Barney's web site.[7]

Designed to reach 66% of the target audience at least two times, the print advertising campaign for Barney's Beach Party video included insertions in such high-circulation publications as Family Circle, Parents, Parenting, Child, Rosie and People. Further exposure was generated by an eight-week promotion featuring Barney on 1.5 million packages of Yoplait Yumsters low-fat kids' yogurt. Beginning on April 1, 2002, in a special premium offer, consumers who sent in two Yumsters UPCs plus $1.25 for shipping and handling could select either a Barney, Baby Bop or BJ beach-themed bean bag plush. To support retailers' merchandising efforts for Barney's Beach Party, HIT Entertainment's design team developed floor and counter displays available in a variety of configurations. The displays feature Barney and his surfboard, and called out information about the Beachstakes promotion with tearpads and starbursts.[6]

Live show[]

From April 26, 2002 to April 28, 2002, a stage show titled Barney's Beach Party was performed in Hawaii to promote the video release of same name.

Barney's Beach Party was originally scheduled to be released in May 2002,[8] but was eventually bumped up to an earlier release. The video was available for pre-order on April 2, 2002.[6] Barney's Beach Party was released on VHS and DVD on April 30, 2002 by HIT Entertainment. The VHS and DVD were suggested at a retail price of $14.99 and $16.99 respectively.[7] On June 12, 2002 [citation needed], this video was featured in the Blockbuster Exclusive video, Barney's Summertime Fun (along with Camp Wannarunnaround).

Barney's Beach Party went on to be in the #2 spot on the Billboard Top VHS Sales chart in May 2002[9] and even secured being in the top ten on the Billboard Top Kid Video chart in June 2002.[10] Barney's Beach Party spent two weeks on the Official Video Chart for OCC (between June 7, 2002-June 14, 2002), peaking at #47 during its week of debut on the chart.[11]

Trivia[]

  • When the song, "A Silly Hat", was sung, Mr. Boyd said to the kids, "And you can wear hats to the beach party tonight." However, when it fades to the beach party scene, the kids are not even seen wearing their hats at the beach party.
  • The original 2002 VHS can be seen in the film, Jersey Girl, as the character Gertie in the film places it on the counter wanting to rent it.
  • The boat that Mr. Boyd and the kids ride on during the song "I'd Love to Sail" displays "BHV 627". 627 is the video number for this video (which was a part of the sixth season of Barney & Friends), making this an Easter egg put in by the producers.

Occurrences[]

  • This video marked:
    • This is one of the first Barney videos to be closed captioned by Caption Technologies, Inc.
    • The only appearances of Kalea and Leilani.
    • The final appearances of Kim and Jeff.
    • Another time something happens to the Barney doll before coming to life. It was when Danny dried the Barney doll off with a towel.
    • The final appearance of the first season six Barney costume.
  • Unlike most of his Barney Home Video appearances, Duncan Brannan performs both the speaking and singing voice of Barney rather than solely taking on the singing role.
