The following is an overview of Barney-related news and events that occurred in the year 1993. This year was internally referred to as the "Elvis Year" by The Lyons Group[1] due to the overwhelming success in sales of the Barney property.[2][3]

  • January 20: Barney and Baby Bop appear at President Clinton's First Inauguration Parade.[4]
  • February: Barney and Baby Bop make an appearance at the New York Institute for Special Education.
  • March 13: Barney was supposed to make an appearance at the Holiday Inn Central's Family Expo.
  • April 3-18:
    • Universal Studios Florida hosted the "Barney Street Celebration" which was a mini show/parade.
    • Running four times a day, Universal Studios Hollywood hosted "Barney on Parade", a parade featuring Barney, Baby Bop and other characters from the park, with a few Barney themed floats and a marching band,[5][6]
  • May 1: Barney makes an appearance at the Dillard's in the CoolSprings Galleria mall.
  • May 4: Barney appears via a live, remote simulcast from JCPenney headquarters in Dallas, TX on TVs at more than 1,000 US JCPenney locations.[7]
  • May 26: Barney makes an appearance at the 20th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards to present an award for Outstanding Animated Program.
  • May 29: Barney makes an appearance at Cathryn Ellis School of Dance.
  • May 30: A celebration for the premiere of Barney Publishing occurs in Miami, Florida.
  • June 27: Barney appears at FamilyFest'93 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Barney did twenty-minute sing-along performances are at 10:30 a.m., noon, 1:30, 3 and 4 p.m.[8]
  • September 10: Barney visited Capitol Hill in Washington, DC to do two shows for the children of members of Congress as part of the PBS Back to School Week celebration.[9]
  • September 27: From 9AM to 11AM at the Game Day Sports Cafe in Plano, Texas the "Barney & Friends New Season Celebration" occurs where Barney and Baby Bop introduce BJ.
  • October 2: Barney makes an appearance at the Starlight Children's Foundation of California Presents the First Annual Celebrate! Starlight Carnival on October 2, 1993 at The Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.
  • October 3: Barney and Mother Goose perform at the grand re-opening of LA's Central Library.[10]
  • November 5-15: Barney, Baby Bop, and BJ perform a sing-along show at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, TX.
  • November 6: Barney appears via a live, remote simulcast from JCPenney headquarters alongside the JCPenney Christmas Bear in Dallas, TX on TVs at more than 1,000 US JCPenney locations; Love To Read, With Barney is debuted.[11]
  • November 18: Sheryl Leach talks about the success and creation of Barney at The National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Barney also makes an appearance for the kids at the end.
  • December 4: Barney, Baby Bop, and BJ appear in the Fort Worth Christmas Parade.

  • February: Hasbro distributes Barney toys through Playskool.[12][13]
  • April 2: Binney & Smith and The Lyons Group signed a letter-of-intent for four lines of Crayola activity kits that were to feature Barney.[14] The themes were the following -
    • "On with the Show." It's a puppet theater, with equipment to set up and perform a puppet show. Crayons, markers and other Crayola products are inside.
    • "By the Sea" has a cardboard diver's helmet for decorating, Model Magic compound and cookie cutters. Shapes include Barney.
    • "My Post Office" is a cardboard mailbox with stamps of Barney and others -- but not Elvis.
    • "Shapes and Colors" is a stencil and rubbing art kit.
    • "Barney Organizer" -- not an activity kit -- won't be shipped until October, but it will be a plastic can in which crayons and markers will be placed. Baby Bop, his tiny playmate, will be inside.
  • Talking Barney becomes the top selling toy of the year.[15]
